Child excursions «On poridge» and «On cookies» is a remarkable case to become acquainted with the diversity of the Ukrainian heritage. It will be an exiting trip into ancient knowledges, customs, crafts and traditions.

Our excursion is an exiting trip to the pas. This is kind of interactive action. Everbody will have a possibility being attached to the folk handicrafts.
You’ll have an opportunity to see a drying barn, where you will be teached by professional miller how to grind flour on the 100 years old millstones.
Then we will look to the smithy, where smith already blows up the furs and makes burning hot duty piece of iron. Also you will listen to interesting stories about Ukrainian rural life.
You will get to know how have they had organize their daily work leisure. What food have they usualy eate, and what traditions have they held. Probably you’ll feel yourself as an inhabitant of Ukrainian khutir of XVIII-th century.
“On cookies”
In pre-christian times this this baking from a white flour, as well as kaleta, was considered as symbol of a Sun, and poppy-seed – symbolized the stars.
History of cookies is a real history of child’s gladness. From those certificates, that we succeeded to find on the North of Ukraine, it was possible for children to get cookies three times on a year:
- on Christmas (January 7) they could be given to the best carolers only
- on the New Year Day under the Julian’s calendar (January 14) – the best schedruval’nyky could get them
- on the St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s day at a pre-cristian times our ancestors had celebrate the Day of Summer Soltice. By a case of general gladness hostesses had made a cookies and gave them to all the children. Also they had been given to shephards, that hired to pasture a cattle

“On poridge”
Various porridges were eaten by our ancestors long before appearance of potato in the XIX-th century. About greate nation love to this king of food say’s a planty of ancient proverbs.
Usually mowers, reapers, shepherds, ploughmen, cooked a porridge. Cossack’s, chumack’s, family porridge – how much sacral maintenance it has. Porridge also appears in folk holidays and ceremonies and has there large spiritual maintenance.
Porridge is a ceremonial food for all our nation in general and of every particular citizen from age and to death.
A child has born. At this case had been cooked a porridge. When it will have grew up and began to walk, a parrents putted the porridge in front of it, keep saying: “Strive for your porridge”. That means grow and live.
In Ukraine when the elders had seen a mistake of inexperienced young man, saying: “He ate a little of porridge”.
We invite you to taste the ancient “Sun in a jar”.
